Rating Candles with Fresh Scents

Ever since the Covid-19 pandemic hit, the craze for self care started and there's something so relaxing about watching the flame on a candle sway while drifting off. (Fire hazard!) I love candles so much but I'm such a coward because I can't for the love of God light a lighter. (I swear that the finger is too near the flame it'll burn me to a crisp)

If you know me well, you'll know that I love the smell of green grass. The moment I enjoy the most during a car trip is when we pass the workers using their grass trimmers and the scent just lingers lightly in the air. The smell of fresh candles just make me so happy! Let's dive in to my top picks!

1. Diptyque Figuier Candle (9/10)

My favourite scent of them all has got to be fresh figs with green accents. You can never go wrong with a Diptyque scent. They are such excellent perfumers! Take a whiff of any Diptyque perfume and you'll know that they tell a story.

The scent starts off fresh and green and eventually transforms into a fruity fig. Wood notes are also present here.

Inez's interpretation: Innocent. On a sunny day, you take a stroll while enjoying the beautiful green meadows of the outskirts. A beautiful and strong woody fig tree stands alone with ripe and delicious creamy figs hanging low from it's bunches.

2. Acqua di Parma Fico di Amalfi Candle (7/10)

Another one with figs! This one is a bit special as it leads with a tangy citrus scent, perfect for invigorating your senses! The earthy and raw smell makes it as if you just picked fresh lemons from the garden. For me, this is a less milky Diptyque Figuier, perfect summer candle!

Top notes are tangy lemon and grapefruit followed by fig, closing gracefully with cedar.

Inez's interpretation: Fun-loving. Choosing lemons and grapefruits from the farmer's market followed by a drive in your summer floral dress along the Amalfi Coast.

3. Jo Malone Lime Basil & Mandarin Candle (5/10)

If you really love a good citrus candle, get this! The lime and basil notes here are great for a bad day followed by vetiver and patchouli which gives a lasting woody scent. In my opinion, Jo Malone scents have very good longevity but can be too overwhelming if you are burning this candle in a small room.

This scent leads with citrus fruits - lime and mandarin, immediately behind is basil. They claim to have lilac and iris in the scent but I can't seem to find any hint of floral. Vetiver and Patchouli are quite weak too.

Inez's interpretation: Traditional. Reminds you of a cottage surrounded with home-grown fruits and a family relaxing in the garden.

4. Maison Margiela Lazy Sunday Morning Candle (6/10)

Described as "soft skin and bed linen", this candle is supposed to smell like clean and freshly-aired sheets under the sun and believe me, it does. Unlike other perfumers, Maison Margiela scents are rather simple whereby what you smell on the candle before lighting it up is exactly what you are going to get.

This candle smells very comforting with notes of fleur-de-lys, orange blossom and iris.

Inez's interpretation: New home, new bed, new sheets. Waking up to the morning sun shining through the window has never felt this comforting and peaceful! Snuggle up to the crisp and clean linen sheets, because Sunday mornings are meant for sleeping in.

5. Le Labo Petit Grain 21 Candle (7/10)

My love for figs should be widely known by now and almost every candlemaker has a fig candle in their line. However, I chose this one from Le Labo because this was the best fresh scent (Yes, better than the fig one). I would say that Le Labo fragrances are very deep and moody irregardless of it being a woody, floral or fresh scent.

The scent you get is not your typical happy green and light floral fresh scent. Instead its green scents smell more like moss and dew with a strong punch of orange blossom.

Inez's interpretation: The storm has just passed and the clouds are slowly fading away. Water droplets slowly trickle down the bark of a giant oak tree. A lush green forest full of life awaits you as you leave your house in your Wellies.

6. Bath and Body Works Eucalyptus Mint Candle (7/10)

Say hello to this big time stress reliever! I've heard so much about this candle and I thought I simply had to try it! This scent gives off a very calm and relaxing vibe, yet very fresh and clean. No extras, just pure eucalyptus and mint, exactly what the title says! However, too much of this made my whole house smell like Vicks Vapour Rub/ Wrigley's Gum. As long as you stick to a smaller candle for a small room, this one is a steal!

Inez's interpretation: What a hectic day! You come back home from the office and thank the heavens you stay in a cozy home with a beautiful view of the emerald green hills. Time for a relaxing bath with soothing menthol mint and eucalyptus leaves to cleanse your mind, spirit and soul.

Verdict: If you're on a budget, needless to say, get the Bath and Body Works Eucalyptus and Mint! I would say that it's a very safe blind buy if you have no time to take a whiff of it at the stores. As a gift for him, go for the Le Labo Petit Grain 21 and as a gift for her, the Diptyque Figuier works best. As a gift for yourself, try them all!
